OHS Training & Competency Policy

1. Policy Statement

Guidance: The OHS Act (Section 8) places a duty on employers to provide the necessary information, instructions, training, and supervision to ensure safety. This policy formalizes the commitment to meeting that duty.

We will provide a program of training, instruction, and supervision to develop and maintain the skills and knowledge necessary for all personnel to contribute to a safe and healthy workplace.

2. Our Commitments

• Training Needs Analysis: To systematically identify the training needs of all employees based on their roles, responsibilities, and the risks associated with their work.
• Induction Training: To provide all new employees and contractors with a comprehensive OHS induction before they commence work.
• Task-Specific Training: To provide specific training for all tasks, particularly those that are high-risk or require specialized skills.
• Refresher Training: To conduct regular refresher training to ensure that knowledge and skills are maintained over time.
• Competency Assessment: To verify the competence of employees to perform their tasks safely, through appropriate assessment methods.
• Record Keeping: To maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all training and competency assessments for all employees.

3. Roles & Responsibilities

• Top Management: Is responsible for providing the resources for an effective training and competency program.
• OHS / Training Manager: Is responsible for developing the training program, conducting needs analyses, and maintaining records.
• Line Managers: Are responsible for identifying the training needs of their team members, ensuring they attend required training, and for providing on-the-job supervision and coaching.
• All Employees: Are responsible for attending all required training, applying what they have learned in their work, and highlighting any personal training needs to their supervisor.

4. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed at least every two years.
